REVIEW: Louis Lortie with HKPhil

Cultural Centre Concert Hall, Saturday September 21

I am eight reviews behind thus this will be a short one. The concert was literally a short one also because I left during the intermission due to the impending typhoon Usagi.

The concert, with maestro Jean-Marie Zeitouni conducting, started with John Estacio’s Brio: Toccata and Fantasy for Orchestra. The piece was exactly one will expect from an opening number, it was bubbly and vivacious with a tinge of anxiety and expectation of what will come next. It was a brilliant start.

Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 followed. Louis Lortie gave an interpretation that is lyrical without being overly-mannered and dramatic. Well, I like that, but my friend who with me was in the opposite end. I suppose he was expecting waves of outpour, which is not exactly something I would dislike, but in the way the orchestra and Lortie interacted, there was a kind of poetic simplicity that let the music flow yet one still felt a level of edginess that was touching.
